Italian police have arrested 539 people in a large operation against youth crime carried out across the country. The country’s media reported on Monday that the simultaneous operation in 44 provinces also brought charges against 954 more people, Anadolu reported.
According to the Italian news agency ANSA, 47 of those arrested are minors. Police said they had identified 973 social-media profiles promoting hatred, violence, incitement to attack law-enforcement officers, and the use of firearms and knives. Two of the accounts have been referred to the judicial authorities for possible closure.
During the operation police checked the identities of about 188,000 people, more than 19,000 of them minors, with particular focus on areas known for drug dealing and night-time entertainment. Police seized more than 700 kg of drugs, including 41 kg of cocaine, 660 kg of cannabinoids, 2 kg of ketamine, about 1,000 oxycodone tablets, as well as ecstasy, MDMA, methamphetamine and benzodiazepines.
Officers searched 1,182 premises, including 24 shelters for unaccompanied foreign minors, 117 gaming arcades, 543 commercial establishments and various public venues. They seized €307,000 (about $351,000) in cash, 49 firearms, ammunition, 87 bladed weapons and 95 more objects that could be used in attacks, as well as items including gold chains and mobile phones suspected of being stolen. Police issued 506 administrative fines, mostly for drug use and for selling alcohol to minors.
