MOULVIBAZAR — At dawn on Friday, the homes along the haor were still asleep. Beyond them, fish farms have grown up along both sides of the road. It is now the boro rice planting season. In several places, farmers have begun transplanting boro seedlings. Some fields look like a sheet of green spread out by hand.
In one plot, farmers were pulling up seedlings to transplant. Elsewhere, they were planting them. In some fields, planting was already finished. Those plots lay submerged under a dull fog.
At one spot, several people had set up irrigation pumps to drain a pond to catch fish. Once the water is drained, they will haul in their catch. Others, at night or at dawn, return home alone after catching fish in the haor’s canals and beels.
Some shoulder a sheunti, a bamboo-and-reed contraption for bailing water, and a kakrain, a bamboo-and-reed basket for carrying fish, and head out to the haor. They drain the small khainja pits and catch fish there. After keeping enough for the family, they sell the rest.
