MOULVIBAZAR — BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman will travel Thursday to Sherpur in Moulvibazar Sadar upazila to address a mass rally at the Ainpur field. The rally comes ahead of the next general election.
Tarique is returning to the region after a long absence. BNP units across the district, its upazila branches, grassroots organizations and affiliated groups are working to fill the venue. Party leaders said they expect more than 100,000 people to attend.
District BNP sources said Tarique will launch the party’s formal campaign for the 13th parliamentary election Thursday with visits to the shrines of Hazrat Shahjalal and Hazrat Shahparan in Sylhet. He will fly into Sylhet on Wednesday night.
Tarique will visit the shrines Thursday morning, then address his first rally at the Aliya Madrasa ground in Sylhet at 11 a.m. as chief guest.
After the Sylhet rally, he will travel by road on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway. He is expected at the second rally of the day, on the Ainpur grounds in Sherpur of Moulvibazar Sadar upazila, between 1 and 2 p.m.
Local BNP leaders said preparations are nearly complete and excitement is running high among party workers. People from the seven upazilas of Moulvibazar district will attend, along with residents of parts of Nabiganj upazila in Habiganj and parts of Osmaninagar and Balaganj in Sylhet, since they border Sherpur.
District BNP leaders said this is the first time in years that the party’s top leadership has visited Moulvibazar. They noted that the late President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia had previously visited Sherpur.
Fayzul Karim, convener of the Moulvibazar district BNP, said Monday: “We are holding the rally at the Ainpur field in Sherpur. We expect more than 100,000 people. This is a large program. Our preparations are nearly done. Work is continuing on the venue. We have been visiting the site regularly and holding meetings. Central leaders, in addition to district leaders, have also inspected the venue.”
