BEIRUT — Israeli military forces conducted extensive airstrikes in Lebanon on Wednesday morning, April 8. The strikes in Lebanon’s southern Tyre and Nabatiyeh areas came shortly after the U.S.-Iran ceasefire was announced.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu denied that the ceasefire includes the conflict with the Iran-backed Lebanese group Hezbollah.

The Lebanese government and Hezbollah have not yet issued any formal statement. But mediator Pakistan had signaled that Lebanon was included in the agreement. Recent reports indicate Hezbollah had called on Iran to include the Lebanon front in any agreement. Israel, meanwhile, has signaled it wants to create a security buffer zone inside Lebanon’s border. Israeli troops have already entered Lebanon, and there are concerns that parts of the country could come under Israeli occupation.
