SONARGAON, Bangladesh — Two brothers drowned Friday afternoon in a pond in Narayanganj’s Sonargaon upazila while trying to retrieve a football, police said, in an incident that has plunged the area into mourning.
The deaths occurred in the Rayertek area of Kanchpur Union, residents said. The brothers, Adnan, 10, and Abraham, 7, were playing with a ball near a pond by their home around noon, residents said. When their family could not find them, a search began, and the bodies were recovered one after another from the pond.
The boys were declared dead on arrival at a hospital. Residents believe they died while trying to retrieve the ball from the water. The brothers were the sons of Ziaur Rahman of Pirojpur village in Kushtia district and lived as tenants in the home of Nizam Khan at Rayertek Khan Bari in Kanchpur. They were students at Abdullah Ibne Masud Madrasa in the Kanchpur Puran Bazar area.
Sonargaon police station Officer-in-Charge Md. Mohibullah confirmed the incident, saying he had received the report of the two brothers’ drowning deaths.
