FARIDPUR — Faridpur’s Saltha upazila held a traditional horse race on Tuesday for the first time in 15 years, drawing what organizers said was a crowd of about 100,000.

The race, organized by local residents to preserve rural traditions, was held Tuesday afternoon, April 7, along a 2-kilometer stretch from Chitailar Bil to Nishatla in Ballavdi union of the upazila, organizers said.

Nine horses of various sizes took part in the race, organizers said. The horse owned by Jasim Mollah won the first prize, a 26-inch LED television. Nurul Islam’s horse won the second prize of 8,000 taka, and Bilayet Hossain’s horse took third place and 6,000 taka in cash, organizers said.

Residents said the return of the long-suspended event brought visible joy to the area, and organizers said they hoped to make it a regular event.

“I am delighted to have taken part after such a long gap,” said Jasim Mollah, the first-place horse owner, adding that he planned to compete again in the future. Nurul Islam Matubbar said such events strengthen rural culture and social bonds.

Upazila and union political leaders, the union parishad chairman, ward members and other local notables attended the event, organizers said.
