More than 50 hurt in clash over fishing in Habiganj

Villagers brought the clash under control before police arrived; no case had been filed.

More than fifty people have been injured in a bloody clash between two groups over fishing in a jointly owned pond in Fulbaria village in Lakhai upazila, Habiganj. The clash, between supporters of Barkat Ali and Salim Uddin, took place in the village at about 8am on Saturday.

Local sources said that when people of Barkat Ali’s side went to fish in a jointly owned pond in the village, people of Salim Uddin’s side stopped them. A heated argument followed, and at one stage people on both sides fought with locally made weapons. More than fifty people on the two sides were injured in the clash, which went on for about an hour.

Among the seriously injured, Barkat Ali, 35, Nayeem, 19, Emon, 18, Nur Uddin, 28, Arjan, 47, Ful Mia, 60, Mohiuddin, 42, Bayezid, 50, Ghiyas Uddin, 40, Mizan Uddin, 50, and a 16-year-old were admitted to Lakhai Upazila Health Complex. Others were sent to Habiganj Sadar Hospital and to Dhaka for treatment, and several went home after first aid locally.

Lakhai police station officer-in-charge Sharif Ahmed said the area was now completely calm. The clash was brought under control with the help of villagers before police reached the scene. No case had been filed over it at the police station at the time of writing.
