The Election Commission will announce a roadmap on 12 October setting out when the local government elections will begin and in how many phases they will be held.

Election Commissioner Brig Gen (retd) Abul Fazal Md Sanaullah told journalists this at the Nirbachan Bhaban in Agargaon on Thursday.

He said: “The roadmap for the local government elections will be finalised at the commission’s meeting next Monday and made known.”

In reply to a question, Sanaullah said: “The Election Commission will sit in dialogue with the political parties on the local government elections, including the union parishad elections. The commission is preparing for this.”

Meanwhile, Nepal’s Election Commission has sought technical assistance from the Bangladesh Election Commission on introducing package postal voting.

Sanaullah said Nepal wants to introduce a system of voting for expatriates like Bangladesh’s, and its election commission has shown interest in technical cooperation on Bangladesh’s IT-supported postal voting system.

The commission also met representatives of the European Union at 11:30am on Thursday. The local government elections and other election matters were discussed.

Sanaullah said a clear picture of the detailed schedule, the phases and which election will be held first would emerge only after the commission’s meeting next Monday.
