Local elections will be free and fair, says state minister

Local government elections will be held from January as announced by the Election Commission, and the current government wants to deliver free, fair and impartial local elections and will take no electoral stain on itself, said Mir Shahe Alam MP, state minister for local government, rural development and cooperatives, who is responsible for coordinating development in Rangpur, Gaibandha and Kurigram districts.

He was speaking as chief guest at a law and order committee meeting organised by the Rangpur district administration in its auditorium on Tuesday afternoon.

The government is working for the development of neglected Rangpur, the state minister said, and the district’s various problems will be identified and solved in phases.

Asked by journalists about the deterioration of law and order in Rangpur, he said: “We will give the necessary directions from today’s meeting. If the situation does not improve by next month’s meeting, action will be taken against the officials responsible.”

On balanced development across the country, he said Rangpur would also be developed. Tk 127 crore has already been allocated for the district’s six constituencies, and proposals for development projects worth about Tk 3,600 crore for Rangpur division have been sent to ECNEC. Projects in public health, education and other important sectors have also been proposed, and implementing them quickly will gradually solve Rangpur’s long-standing problems, he said.

On the Teesta, Mir Shahe Alam said the government is working on it and is determined to implement effective steps very soon.

The meeting was chaired by Deputy Commissioner Israt Jahan. Members of parliament from Rangpur district, senior officials, members of law enforcement agencies and officials from various departments also attended.
