Dhaka University Mourning Day will be observed on 15 October in memory of those killed in the tragic accident at Jagannath Hall on 15 October 1985. All classes and activities of the university will be suspended for the day.
The accident happened on the night of 15 October 1985, when the roof of a building at Jagannath Hall collapsed. Forty people were killed, 26 students and 14 guests and employees, and many more were injured. Dhaka University observes the day every year in their memory.
To mark the day, black flags will be raised at 6am on the university’s main buildings and at all halls and hostels. The university flag will be flown at half-mast and teachers, students, officers and employees will wear black badges. At 7:30am a mourning procession led by the vice-chancellor, Prof Dr ABM Obaidul Islam, will set out from the foot of Aparajeyo Bangla and end at the Jagannath Hall memorial, where wreaths will be laid and silence observed. A discussion will be held at 8am in the TV room of the hall’s October Memorial Building. From 9am to 10am prayer meetings of Hindus, Buddhists and Christians will be held in the hall grounds.
After the Asr prayer, prayers for the peace of the souls of the dead will be offered at the university’s central mosque, Masjidul Jamia, and at all hall mosques. The hall administration will also exhibit oil portraits of the dead and information and mementoes of the accident from 10am to 6pm.
