Teachers, officers and staff at Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) have declared a programme of total non-cooperation in protest at the appointment of the new vice-chancellor, Sheikh Shariful Alam, and to press demands they had announced earlier. Three associations have said the programme will continue, alongside a full work stoppage, until the demands are met.
The decision was taken on Monday at a joint meeting of the Teachers’ Association, the Officers’ Association and the Staff Association in the university’s central auditorium. The programme was later announced in a joint statement. The statement said the three associations reject with contempt the new vice-chancellor’s entry to the campus with the help of outsiders. It also said the vice-chancellor would have to bear full responsibility if any untoward situation arose from the incident.
The associations said the full work stoppage and total non-cooperation, along with refraining from all duties, will continue until the previously announced demands are met.
A section of the teachers, officers and staff at CUET has been protesting against the appointment of Sheikh Shariful Alam and demanding the reinstatement of the former vice-chancellor, Abu Sadat Muhammad Sayem. The movement is also disrupting normal academic activity at the university.
