MYMENSINGH — A court here sentenced three brothers to life imprisonment Sunday in a 2008 murder case from Gaffargaon, ending an 18-year proceeding.
Each defendant was also fined 30,000 taka, with an additional six months in jail if they fail to pay, said bench assistant Abdul Malek. Judge Farzana Ahmed of the Mymensingh Additional District and Sessions Judge (Fourth) Court issued the verdict on the afternoon of May 10.
The convicts are Shahbaz Mia, 58, Hanifa, 50, and Md. Rafiqul Islam, 53, all sons of Giyas Uddin from Shilashi village in Gaffargaon upazila.
Of the six original defendants, three were convicted after the prosecution proved its case, while the other three were acquitted, court sources said.
Case records show that on the morning of Aug. 10, 2008, a local resident named Nurul Haque was attacked in Shilashi village over a dispute stemming from a football match. He was struck with locally made weapons and seriously injured. He was taken to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Kazal Mia, the victim’s son, filed a murder case at Gaffargaon police station. After an investigation, police filed charges against six people. Three were convicted based on the evidence and testimony presented at trial.
The prosecution was represented by lawyer A.H.M. Masudul Alam Khan Tanna, and the defense by lawyer Khalekuzzaman.
