A robbery of Tk 3.5 million has occurred in the home of a fish trader in Muktagachha, Mymensingh. On Tuesday (May 12), Muktagachha Police, with the assistance of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), arrested two individuals from the Shahjahanpur area of Dhaka. Later, based on information provided by the arrestees, police conducted operations at separate locations and recovered Tk 2.1 million of the stolen money.
The two arrestees are Saurav Mita (30), son of Sirajul Islam of Birashi Union in Muktagachha, and Jani (25), son of Abul Kalam Kalum Mita. They were sent to jail on Wednesday (May 13) through court.
According to the victim’s complaint and police sources, Abdul Motleb, father of fish trader Ashraful Alam of Birashi village, kept Tk 3.5 million at home to buy land and recently went on Hajj. The money was kept in a steel trunk in Ashraful’s mother Mosammat Hasina Begum’s room and locked. On May 1, around evening time, after Hasina locked the house and went to the neighbor’s house, she returned to find the locks of the house’s door and the steel trunk broken, with the thieves having stolen the Tk 3.5 million.
In the wake of this incident, a case was filed at the police station, prompting an investigation by the police. Utilizing forensic technology, the police arrested two individuals in Dhaka on Tuesday.
Based on the information provided by arrested individuals Saurav and Janit, Dhaka’s Shahjahanpur Police Station authorities recovered 18 lakh Tk from a room inside a fourth-floor apartment at Building No. 28, Shahjahanpur Rail Colony, Shorowarddy Meter Vasha residence. Meanwhile, three lakh Tk was recovered from beneath the floor of a goat shed in Char Kustia village under Mymensingh Sadar Upazila, belonging to Shikhara Aktar Shormin, Saurav’s aunt.
Muktagachha Thana Officer-in-Charge (OC) Kamrul Islam said that after the incident, the district police superintendent gave instructions to give more importance to the case, leading to a raid on the field. Two thieves involved in the incident have been arrested. Of the 35 lakh taka stolen, 21 lakh taka has been recovered from them so far. Efforts are underway to recover the remaining amount.
OC officials also revealed that both the arrested individuals are active members of a theft and robbery ring and have previous records. Several cases, including theft, robbery, and drug-related charges, are pending against them.
