Police have claimed to have solved the mystery of the recovery of the sack-bound body of Maria Begum Sharifa (75), an elderly woman found 15 days after she went missing in Natore’s Singra. Her daughter, Morjina Begum, has filed a case alleging murder and concealment of the body, and police have arrested the dead woman’s second son, Janab Ali (55), and grandson Al Amin (25). Natore Superintendent of Police (SP) Mohammad Shariful Haque gave the information at a press briefing at Singra police station on Wednesday (10 June) afternoon, attended by Singra circle additional SP Nur Mohammad Ali, officer-in-charge (OC) Rafiqul Islam and inspector (investigation) Shafiqul Islam. The dead woman was the wife of the late Mozahar Ali of Agpara Sherkol village in the upazila’s Sherkol union.

According to police and local sources, on 23 May an argument broke out between the woman’s eldest son, Shahidul Islam, and second son, Janab Ali, over the digging of a toilet pit on the homestead boundary, in which the mother took the eldest son’s side. Enraged at his mother, Janab Ali strangled her at about 9pm on 25 May and dumped her body in that same toilet pit, covering it with a slab. Ten days later, on 4 June, when the body began to give off a stench, he lifted it from the pit in the dead of night, put it in a sack and threw it into a water-hyacinth pond beside the house — assisted in concealing the body by his son Al Amin. Police recovered the sack-bound body from the pond on Tuesday (9 June); after the woman’s four sons and relatives were brought to the station for extensive questioning, the two arrested men confessed to the killing and the concealment.

Singra OC Rafiqul Islam said the dead woman’s daughter Morjina Begum had filed a murder case, and that the second son Janab Ali and grandson Al Amin had been arrested for their alleged involvement and sent to court.
