Russia’s Security Council deputy chairman Dmitri Medvedev said the Strait of Hormuz is not Iran’s only strategic asset — the Bab al-Mandeb strait could also serve as the country’s “alternative weapon,” Al Jazeera reported.

Speaking in Tehran while attending the funeral of Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Medvedev said the Strait of Hormuz is “a strategic asset equivalent to nuclear weapons” for Iran.

“Those who want to provoke conflict in this region should remember this reality,” he said.

Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen have previously threatened to block the Bab al-Mandeb strait. On June 8, the Houthis declared a ban on Israeli ship traffic in the Red Sea.
