Iran’s parliament speaker, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, has said the Strait of Hormuz will not be opened until the conditions Iran has set are met. Speaking in parliament, he said the memorandum of understanding signed in June has now become ineffective. Ghalibaf said this important waterway would remain closed until the United States fulfils its commitments under the understanding.

He said Iran had conveyed its message and conditions clearly to the other side through mediators.

The Iranian parliament speaker said the enemy side knows very well that the path of deception and of imposing one-sided decisions is now closed. Until these conditions are met, the legitimate rights of the Iranian nation are recognised and the commitments are carried out, he said, there will be no scope for returning to the position before the talks or for reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran had earlier sent some formal conditions to Washington through Qatari mediation for ending the continuing war with the United States.

In a special interview with Al Jazeera on Saturday, Iran’s security chief, Mohsen Rezaei, said: “Our conditions are that the war must be stopped on every front, our frozen money must be released and the naval blockade must be lifted.”
