Two people have died after being electrocuted in separate incidents in South Gaffargaon and Nandail upazilas of Mymensingh. The accidents happened on Saturday (1 August) morning in Bagra village of Longair union in South Gaffargaon upazila and in Char Mahishkura village of neighbouring Nandail upazila.

The dead are Ratul, 19, son of Ramiz Uddin of Bagra village in Longair union, and Badal Mia, 49, son of Ferdous Alam of Char Mahishkura village.

Dr Nasrin Sultana Mun, the doctor on duty at the Gaffargaon Upazila Health Complex, confirmed the deaths of the two by electrocution.

According to local sources, Ratul of Bagra village worked at a local establishment. On the day of the incident, around 11 am, he went to feed fish at a fishery, where he was accidentally electrocuted. Local people rescued him in a critical state and took him to the Gaffargaon Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor, Dr Nasrin Sultana Mun, declared him dead.

Separately, around 10 am the same day, Badal Mia of Char Mahishkura village was electrocuted while turning on the switch of an irrigation pump’s power line. Local people quickly rescued him and took him to the Gaffargaon Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor, Dr Nasrin Sultana Mun, also declared him dead.

Ratul’s uncle, Anisur Rahman, alleged that the accident happened because the fishery used a power connection without the necessary safety measures.

Gaffargaon police station officer-in-charge Md Moniruzzaman and Pagla police station officer-in-charge Md Aminul Islam confirmed the deaths, saying two people had died of electrocution in two separate incidents. The matters are being looked into and necessary legal steps will be taken, they said.
