RAB-14 has arrested a 27-year-old man for the hacking death of Mohammad Rabbi, 25, in the Maskanda area of Mymensingh city, with the suspect claiming the killing was revenge for a 2018 attack on his father.

Abdul Khalek was arrested from the Raghurampur area of the city on Thursday night, RAB-14 Mymensingh company commander Md Shamsuzzaman said at a press conference on Friday.

After the briefing, Khalek spoke to reporters, saying he killed Rabbi to avenge his father. “Fifteen of them hacked my father, and we two brothers hacked him back,” he said. He claimed to be an educated man driven to violence by the failure of the justice system to address the original attack.

RAB said Rabbi’s associates had attacked Khalek’s father Fazlul Haq in 2018, allegedly severing his hand. The long-standing enmity drove the planned attack, Khalek told investigators. He said he used a large machete.

The attack took place Thursday afternoon near the regional passport office in Maskanda. Rabbi took shelter in a nearby shop, but the attackers followed and hacked him severely. His brother Mohammad Riyad was also injured while trying to save him. Rabbi was taken to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Khalek also accused Rabbi’s group of running an extortion racket, collecting Tk 200 from each shop in the area and assaulting those who refused to pay. RAB said it has not yet verified these claims and is investigating whether other disputes were involved.

Following the killing, angry locals set fire to the homes of the accused. Police and fire services brought the blaze under control.

Mymensingh Kotwali Model police station officer-in-charge Mohammad Shibirul Islam said the victim’s father, Mobarak Hossain, filed a case naming 11 people and three to four unidentified suspects. RAB arrested one; police are continuing operations to apprehend the others.
