Daily life around the important inter-district Maskanda bus terminal in Mymensingh city has been plagued by encroachment and pollution. The Mymensingh City Corporation has finally conducted a drive against the illegal structures built up by occupying footpaths and government land over a long period.

In the drive, which ran from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday (June 15), more than 100 illegal structures and makeshift shops built up around the bus terminal were cleared. Permanent and temporary houses, tin sheds and shops were demolished with a bulldozer.

The drive was led by the city corporation administrator, Md. Ruknozzaman Rokon. Executive magistrates and members of the law enforcement forces were present and assisted in the drive.

Relieved after a long period of suffering, ordinary pedestrians and long-distance passengers expressed satisfaction with the drive. They complained that movement in the bus terminal area had been difficult and risky because of the illegal occupation.

The city administration said such drives would continue to keep the city’s footpaths free of encroachment and to ease public suffering.
