Police seize cannabis plants hidden in betel nut garden in Kurigram

Police seized four cannabis plants from a betel nut garden in Bhurungamari upazila, Kurigram, on Wednesday (July 1). The plants were found in the Mollapara area of West Chhatgopalpur, Tilai union.

Police said Majedul Islam Manju had been secretly growing and tending the cannabis plants in his betel nut garden. Two plants were approximately 12 feet tall and two were approximately two feet tall. Manju was not present in the area and could not be arrested, but a case will be filed against him under the Narcotics Control Act.

The operation was led by Bhurungamari Circle ASP Muntasir Mamun Moon and Bhurungamari OC Azim Uddin.

Locals said Manju is a known drug user who has been secretly cultivating cannabis for a long time.

ASP Moon said Bhurungamari is a border area near India where many betel nut gardens have been established. Drug dealers have begun using these gardens to grow cannabis, and regular operations will be conducted against them, he said.
