Benapole Port police have arrested Md Sujan Mondal (31) with 97 bottles of the illegal narcotic Winserex cough syrup (Phensidyl) in a special raid in Benapole, Jashore, also seizing an Android mobile phone used in selling drugs. Sujan Mondal was detained from the paved road in front of the gate of Md Awal’s house in Bhaberber village of Benapole Port police station area around 4:50am on Monday, 10 August. He is the son of Shafi Mondal of that village.
According to police, a team led by ASI (unarmed) Md Sabuj Ali carried out the raid and detained Sujan, recovering 97 bottles of Winserex cough syrup from a white plastic shopping bag he was carrying — each 100ml bottle, for a total of 9,700ml, with an estimated market value of 97,000 taka, police said. A Vivo Android phone was also recovered from the right fold of Sujan’s lungi, which police say was used to sell drugs. Sujan was taken to the station with the recovered drugs and other evidence and a case was filed; legal action against him is under way. Benapole Port officer-in-charge (OC) Ashraf Hossain confirmed the incident, saying a drug case had been filed against Sujan Mondal and he had been sent to a Jashore court. Locals alleged that a ring had long been involved in the drug trade in the Bhaberber area of Benapole and called for regular raids and tough action against identified dealers; these locally sourced allegations could not be independently verified.
