Despite a fine fight at the World Cup, Jordan have had to bow out in the end. Beaten 2-1 by Algeria, they have been knocked out of the tournament. Algeria, on the other hand, kept their hopes of reaching the knockout round alive with the win.

The first team to exit this World Cup was Haiti. After Haiti, who had come to play a World Cup after nearly seven decades, the next to go out were Turkey, who had qualified after 24 years. The third country to exit, on Sunday, was another Muslim nation, Tunisia. Jordan have now joined them.

In this 48-team edition, 16 teams will be eliminated at the group stage and 32 will go through to the next round. The top two from each group — 24 teams — and the eight best of the 12 third-placed teams, ranked by points, goal difference and fair play, will play in the round of 32.
