Mojtaba Khamenei – the son of Iran’s late supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and the country’s current supreme leader – has said that his father’s killing in US and Israeli strikes will definitely be avenged. In a statement published by Iran’s state news agency Fars, Mojtaba said: “Taking revenge is the demand of our nation, and it will definitely be carried out.”

Addressing his late father, the statement said: “We swear that we will take revenge, for your sacred blood and the blood of all the martyrs of these two wars, on those criminal and disgraced killers.” Mojtaba added: “The names of all these criminals, from top to bottom, are known and on record. The wish they harbor of dying peacefully in bed in old age will go to the grave with them. They should know that this does not depend on whether I or any other official remains alive.” Whether he lived or not, the statement said, the pledge would be fulfilled “very soon.”

US President Donald Trump recently threatened that if Iran tried to kill him he would reduce the country to “dust,” and Iran’s warning came within hours of that threat. Israeli intelligence has recently claimed that a plot to kill the US president is being hatched, and, according to Israeli and US officials, some faction of Tehran’s hardline leaders harbors a desire to kill Trump. Two US sources familiar with the matter, however, said a recent US intelligence assessment had found no evidence of a new or specific plot to kill Trump, though there was chatter about various Iranian factions’ wish to do so.

Since being appointed the new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei has not been seen in public. It is believed that he was also injured last February when his father, mother, child and wife were killed in the US and Israeli assault. Since the war began, the new supreme leader has not appeared publicly and has communicated with his supporters only through written statements, without showing his face or delivering a message in his own voice. Very few messages have been released since his appointment, and Saturday’s was one of them.
