Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury is presenting the largest national budget in the country’s history, for fiscal 2026-27. Presentation began at 3pm on Thursday (11 June) in the second session of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad, chaired by Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad (Bir Bikram). It is the first budget of the BNP-led government since its victory in the 12 February election. The session began with a recitation from the holy Quran, after which the Speaker invited the finance minister to present the budget.
The government has proposed reducing the investment-related tax rebate. Individual taxpayers currently receive an investment rebate for putting money into nine sectors, including savings certificates, DPS and life-insurance premiums — the rebate deducted from the final tax being the lowest of three figures: 0.03 percent of total income, 15 percent of total allowable investment, or a maximum of 10 lakh taka. Next year the allowable investment ceiling has been cut from 15 percent to 10 percent and the maximum from 10 lakh taka to 7.5 lakh taka. By that calculation, a taxpayer will get 5,000 taka less rebate for every 1 lakh taka invested.
