The life of former Indian cricketer Sourav Ganguly is coming to the big screen. Filming is now in full swing for his biopic, “Dada.” The film’s first-look poster was released yesterday to mark Sourav Ganguly’s birthday, alongside an official release date announcement. Directed by Vikramaditya Motwane, the film will hit theaters on May 14, 2027.
Ganguly’s celebration on the Lord’s balcony, waving his jersey after India’s 2002 NatWest Trophy win, remains one of cricket history’s most memorable scenes. The poster recreates that historic Lord’s moment, with Rajkummar Rao playing Ganguly. Sharing the poster on social media, Ganguly wrote to Rajkummar Rao: “Best birthday gift. Can’t wait to see you as me on screen.”
While Ganguly was thrilled to see the first look of his biopic, reactions from netizens have been largely negative and mixed. Many on social media expressed disappointment after seeing the poster, with several commenting that Rajkummar simply doesn’t suit Ganguly’s character. Rajkummar had also faced trolling earlier after shooting footage leaked. At the time, Ganguly had defended the actor, citing the example of Sushant Singh Rajput, who played Mahendra Singh Dhoni on screen.
Ganguly said: “Rajkummar is a fantastic actor. But you won’t find someone who looks exactly like me. He’s acting. My life is being portrayed through film acting. This is where people go wrong, expecting an exact resemblance. How is that even possible? Did Sushant Singh Rajput look like M.S. Dhoni? But he did a brilliant job playing Dhoni’s character.”
Produced under the T-Series and Luv Films banners, the film will give equal weight to Ganguly’s personal life alongside his cricketing career and combative captaincy. Tanya Maniktala plays Ganguly’s wife, Dona Ganguly, while Shaswata Chatterjee plays his father and Aparajita Adhya plays his mother.
