In 1980, President Ziaur Rahman brought a vast portion of the Chittagong Hill Tracts under rubber cultivation with a vision to advance the country. Forty-six years ago, we answered his call and came forward with hope and courage to establish rubber plantations. But after Ziaur Rahman’s death, no progress was made in this sector.

We were promised roads, electricity, bank loans, and security. None of it materialized. We received electricity only 11 years ago, and only because we are close to the main road. Labor that once cost 20 taka now costs 700 to 800 taka. Far from making a profit selling rubber, it is difficult even to cover monthly expenses.

Another problem is elephant attacks. Elephants destroy homes, water tanks, rubber trees, and other vegetation day after day, yet there is no remedy from the government. The government could designate at least 1,000 acres in the Chittagong Hill Tracts as elephant habitat.

Some NGOs bring large sums from various countries in the name of elephant conservation, yet only a fraction is actually spent on the animals. Our demand is that special measures be taken for elephant conservation while ensuring electricity for all plantations. Elephants generally cause less trouble when lights are kept on. Bribery for electricity lines and poles must be stopped. We want cooperation from all levels of government on this matter. Above all, we want security for our lives.
