The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) has approved five projects at a cost of Tk 7,003.36 crore. Of this, Tk 4,536.10 crore will come from the government’s own financing and Tk 2,467.26 crore as project loans.
The approvals were given on Tuesday at a meeting held in the cabinet room of the Secretariat, chaired by Prime Minister and ECNEC Chairperson Tarique Rahman. Three of the projects are new and two are revised.
Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury; Local Government and Rural Development Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir; Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman; Industries, Textiles and Jute and Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir; Road Transport and Bridges, Railways and Shipping Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam; Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed; Education and Primary and Mass Education Minister Dr. A.N.M. Ehsanul Haque Milon; Water Resources Minister Md. Shahiduddin Chowdhury Annie; and State Minister for Planning Md. Junaid Abdur Rahim Saki, along with relevant senior government officials, took part in the meeting.
The five projects approved at Tuesday’s meeting are: a project of the Prime Minister’s Office, the ‘Supporting Infrastructure Project for Chinese Economic and Industrial Zone’.
Three projects under the water resources ministry: 1. the rehabilitation of the Muhuri-Kahua flood control, drainage and irrigation project in Feni district (first phase); 2. the ‘Karatoa River System Development’ project; and 3. a project to protect the Talbaria area of Mirpur upazila and the Komarkandi area of Shilaidaha union in Kumarkhali upazila of Kushtia district from Padma river erosion (first revision).
One project under the education ministry: the ‘establishment of one technical school and college in each of 100 upazilas (third revised)’ has been approved.
The meeting was also informed about four projects, each costing less than Tk 50 crore, that had already been approved through the planning minister.
These are: 1. the construction of an airmen’s barrack complex at the Bangladesh Air Force base in Cox’s Bazar; 2. the establishment of the Navy School and College in Savar; 3. the construction of physical infrastructure to improve teaching standards and capacity at the existing BAF Shaheen College at Bangladesh Air Force Station Shamshernagar; and 4. the fourth phase of the pagoda-based pre-primary and Cripitak education program.
