The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) has approved 13 projects costing Tk 16,207.55 crore. Of this, Tk 10,600.80 crore will come from the government’s own funds, Tk 4,081.85 crore from project loans and Tk 1,524.91 crore from the agencies’ own financing.
The approval was given at an ECNEC meeting on Wednesday in the cabinet room at the Secretariat, chaired by the prime minister and ECNEC chairperson, Tarique Rahman. Of the 13 projects, 10 are new, two are revised and one is an extension of a project’s term.
Those present included Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan; Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed; Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmud; Women and Social Welfare Minister Abu Zafar Md Zahid Hossain; Land Minister Md Mizanur Rahman Minu; Industries, Textiles and Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir; Water Resources Minister Md Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anee; Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister M Rashiduzzaman Millat; Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Hossain; Road Transport, Bridges and Railways Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam; State Minister for Planning Md Zonayed Abdur Rahim Saki; and Bangladesh Bank Governor Md Mostakur Rahman, along with senior officials concerned.
Seven of the approved projects are under the local government ministry: road and drainage development in 18 wards of five new zones of Dhaka South City Corporation; development of important infrastructure in Rangpur City Corporation; rehabilitation of damaged roads in Rangpur City Corporation; construction of roads, drains and footpaths in zones 1 to 8 of Gazipur City Corporation; skills development and entrepreneurship for women through cooperatives; rural infrastructure development in Sirajganj, Bogura and Naogaon districts; and the second revision of the second phase of the important urban infrastructure development project.
Under the shipping ministry is the third revision of a project to procure 35 commercial and eight support vessels for BIWTC and build two new slipways. Under the railways ministry is the procurement of 30 metre-gauge diesel-electric locomotives for Bangladesh Railway.
Under the foreign ministry is the renovation and modernisation of the chancery building bought in Paris, France. Under the road transport and bridges ministry are the construction of the second Karatoa bridge at the 15th kilometre of the Bhajanpur-Panchagarh (Z-5060) road, and the second revision of the Thanchi-Remakri-Madak-Likri road project.
Under the power ministry is the construction of the Rampal 442MW-peak solar power plant.
The committee was also informed of one project costing less than Tk 50 crore, already approved by the planning minister: the re-excavation of the Nandahar, the Harabati river, the Nungola canal and the Kharoa canal in Joypurhat district.
