Three members of the same family drowned while bathing in the DND lake at Siddhirganj in Narayanganj, police said. The incident took place on Saturday afternoon in the Kashempara area of South Kadamtali.
The dead were identified as Md. Rasheduzzaman, 22, Md. Galib, 18, and Mosa. Suraiya, 12. The Fire Service later recovered all three bodies.
According to police and local residents, Rasheduzzaman, his brother-in-law Galib and sister-in-law Suraiya went into the DND lake to bathe at around 4 p.m. on Saturday. At one point they sank into the water. When local people could not see them, they alerted the Fire Service and police.
On receiving the report, a diving team from the Narayanganj River Fire Station reached the scene and launched a rescue operation. After about two hours, the bodies of Rasheduzzaman and Galib were recovered first. The body of Suraiya, who had gone missing, was recovered later.
Rasheduzzaman’s home was in Manag village under Kashiani upazila of Gopalganj district. His father’s name is Delwar. Family members said he had come to Dhaka last week in search of work to earn a living. Galib and Suraiya were from Raghunathpur village under Kalia upazila of Narail district; their father is Akram. They were living as tenants at the home of advocate Jalal Saheb in the Kashempara area of South Kadamtali.
On receiving news of the incident, Mizanur Rahman, inspector (investigation) of Siddhirganj police station, went to the scene. He said family members had reported that all three knew how to swim, and that how the accident happened was being examined.
Police said that once the rescue operation was complete, the bodies were handed over to relatives after legal formalities.
