A six-year-old child went missing after falling into a canal in Dhunat upazila of Bogura. The incident occurred around 10 a.m. on Saturday (June 13) in the Nabinagar area of the upazila’s Elangi union.

The missing child was the daughter of a resident of Nabinagar village.

According to local sources, the child was playing with other children in the morning at the ghat near her home, on the Aariyamara canal. At one point she went down into the canal water. Unable to swim, she was swept away by the strong current. Hearing the other children scream, local people rushed to the scene and tried to rescue her.

On receiving word, a team from the Dhunat upazila fire service reached the scene and began a rescue operation. Despite a long search of various parts of the canal, no trace of the child was found.

Sabbir Hossain, a firefighter at the Dhunat upazila fire service office, said the team reached the scene quickly on receiving word and carried out an initial search in the canal. Because of the strong current, the missing child could not be recovered so far, he said.

He added that a diving team from the Rajshahi division had been notified. The rescue operation would resume once the diving team reached the scene, he said.
