BANGKOK, Sept. 26 — Authorities declared 50 districts of Bangkok disaster areas Saturday after three days of heavy rain caused widespread waterlogging and flooding in the Thai capital.

Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt said the city had received about 300 millimeters of rain since Thursday afternoon.

Continuous rain submerged roads and canals across the city. Water also entered many homes and shops along canals and roads. Photos and videos showed Bangkok’s main roads under water, with vehicles abandoned on streets after rising water made movement impossible.

Chadchart said the city’s eastern area was worst affected. He warned that more rain was forecast Saturday but said water was expected to recede quickly once the rain stopped. City authorities are trying to drain floodwater quickly, he said.

On social media, Chadchart said the rain was not stopping and authorities were doing their best. He said they were trying to pump water out, but the canals were full. People living near canals are at highest risk, he said, adding that every canal was now full.

Authorities said it could take another two to three days for the water to fully recede if there is no new rain.

Chadchart advised residents to move vehicles to safe and higher ground.

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation said the influence of a low-pressure system could continue over eastern, northeastern and central Thailand until Sunday. Authorities warned of risks of flash floods, mountain runoff, landslides and overflowing rivers.
