Two people have been killed in a three-way collision between a fuel lorry, a sand-laden truck and a CNG-run auto-rickshaw in Habiganj’s Madhabpur. The accident happened around 1pm on Sunday (9 August) in the Bezura bridge area of the Dhaka-Sylhet highway.
The dead are Ripon Mia, 27, of Ratanpur village in Madhabpur upazila, and Abul Khair, 50, son of Nasir Uddin of the West Madhabpur area.
Police and local sources said that around 1pm a fuel lorry and a sand-laden truck collided head-on on the Bezura bridge. The truck lost control and slammed onto a CNG-run auto-rickshaw beside it, killing Ripon Mia, who was on the truck, and Abul Khair, a passenger in the auto-rickshaw, on the spot.
On getting the news, police and Fire Service members reached the scene and began a rescue operation, taking the injured to hospital and later recovering the bodies and taking them to Shayestaganj Highway police station. Traffic on the highway stopped after the accident and returned to normal after police and the Fire Service removed the wrecked vehicles.
Madhabpur police sub-inspector (SI) Faruk Mia said the truck rode onto the auto-rickshaw after colliding with the fuel lorry, causing the casualties. Shayestaganj Highway police station’s officer-in-charge (OC), Shubho Ranjan Chakma, said the process of handing the bodies to relatives was under way and that legal steps would be taken.
