A court has sent Abdullah Al Masud Madhu, president of the Jhalakathi district unit of the banned Chhatra League, to jail in five cases.
H.M. Kabir Hossain, chief judicial magistrate of Jhalakathi district, ordered him sent to jail on Thursday, June 18.
He was arrested on June 1 from the Dhanmondi area of the capital. He was later shown arrested in five cases at Jhalakathi police station.
Abdullah Al Masud Madhu is the son of Abdul Mannan of the East Chandkathi area of Jhalakathi town.
According to sources, he took charge as president of the Jhalakathi district Chhatra League on October 30, 2021. Police said he had been in hiding since the fall of the Awami League government on August 5, 2024. He faces six cases in all, one in Dhaka and five at Jhalakathi police station, including charges related to explosives and the attack, vandalism and arson of a BNP office, police said.
Awami League leaders attended the funeral prayers of former minister and Awami League leader Tofail Ahmed, police said. Police alleged that near the Taqwa Mosque on Road 12 of Dhanmondi, they gathered leaders and activists of the banned Awami League and its affiliated organizations and were conspiring against the country, marching and chanting anti-state slogans to destabilize it. Police detained Masud Madhu there and took him to Dhanmondi police station.
Over the incident, Sub-Inspector Mithun Singha filed a case at Dhanmondi police station under the anti-terrorism act, naming six people including Al Masud Madhu and a further 200 unidentified people as accused, police said. Madhu is the number one accused in that case and has already been shown arrested in it. Dhanmondi police then sought detailed information about Madhu from Jhalakathi police station.
Mahmud Hasan, officer-in-charge of Jhalakathi Sadar police station, said information on the five cases had been sent. “Abdullah Al Masud Madhu was arrested in a Dhanmondi police station case. He also faces five cases in Jhalakathi. He has already been shown arrested in the Jhalakathi cases, and he has been produced before the court in those cases,” he said.
