The July Museum has been established at Ganabhaban in the capital’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar to preserve the memories of the July 2024 mass uprising, the sacrifice of the martyrs and the key events of the movement, and to present them to future generations. The museum has recently been opened to the general public.

The building was once the official residence of ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina. Its various rooms have now been rearranged to display items used by those killed in the July uprising, memorabilia, photographs, historical documents and other records of the movement.

The museum’s galleries feature the notable events of the past decade and a half, memorabilia of the July uprising, documentary evidence of enforced disappearances and torture, and mementos of those martyred in the movement. The killing of army officers in the BDR mutiny, the events at Shapla Chattar, and various key moments of the movement have also been portrayed. A letter written by martyr Ahnaf to his mother is also on display.

Changes have also been made to the ousted prime minister’s bedroom on the second floor. In place of the furniture used earlier, the bloodstained clothes, watches, shoes, coats and ties and other personal belongings of those martyred in the July movement have been placed. Mementos of expatriate-returnee martyr Rajib have also been preserved in the same room.

In the museum’s open grounds, symbolic graves have been created in memory of the martyrs of the July movement. Various memorable moments of the movement have also been depicted through sculptures. Among them are a rickshaw-puller offering a salute, the moment martyr Mugdho distributed water, and the grief-stricken scene of two sisters carrying their martyred brother’s body on their shoulders on the streets.

The children’s swing on the south veranda of the ousted prime minister’s residence has also been kept as it was. Portraits of children killed in the July movement are now displayed there. Photographs of the martyrs, and information on where and how they were killed, have also been presented in the bathtub used by ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
