A short special session of the national parliament will be called for the country’s 23rd presidential election, ruling-party chief whip Nurul Islam Moni has said.
On Friday, he said: “A special session of the national parliament will be called for the presidential election.” He did not comment on when the session would be summoned.
Earlier, on Thursday, the Election Commission (EC) announced the schedule for the 23rd presidential election. Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin will serve as the returning officer for the election.
Under the announced schedule, nomination papers for president can be submitted on 13 August. Scrutiny of nomination papers is on 16 August, and the last day for withdrawing candidacy is 18 August.
Voting will be held in the National Parliament chamber from 2pm to 5pm on 20 August.
Under the constitution, MPs will elect the country’s president by secret ballot. But if there is only one valid candidate, no vote will be needed.
Former president Md Sahabuddin resigned on 24 July, after which speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed is currently serving as acting president.
