Jahangirnagar University’s Islami Chhatra Shibir branch organized a mini-marathon titled “July Uprising Run 2026” under the theme “July will pulse in our veins until death.” About 1,500 students joined the event, held under the slogan “Run Against Fascism.”
The run began Monday morning, Aug. 3, at the university’s Central Shaheed Minar. Participants passed the Faculty of Biological Sciences, M.M. Hall, the cafeteria, the women’s residence halls and Chourangi before finishing back at the monument. Islami Chhatra Shibir Central President Nurul Islam Saddam attended as chief guest.
After the marathon, campus Shibir Secretary Mazharul Islam said Jahangirnagar University and residents of nearby Savar and Ashulia had made important contributions to the July-August mass uprising. He cited resistance to Chhatra League on campus on July 15, the continuation of protests in defiance of a curfew on July 20, the active participation of teachers, students, officers and staff, and what he described as the bloody struggle in Savar and Ashulia after Aug. 5.
Islam said organizers held the event to preserve the spirit of the July uprising and pass it to a new generation. He said the run was intended to prevent the return of a fascist political culture in the new Bangladesh, strengthen patriotism and opposition to fascism, honor those killed and wounded, and support efforts to build a prosperous country.
Campus Shibir President Md Mostafizur Rahman said July had come at the cost of hundreds of lives and other sacrifices. He said the event commemorated July and August and sent a message to those who might seek to become fascists. He thanked participants on behalf of the university branch.
Rahman said Shibir hoped to help rebuild Bangladesh by carrying forward the spirit of July and honoring the families of those killed. He said the organization would use marathons, marches and meetings to convey the uprising’s aspirations to future generations.
Nurul Islam Saddam said the country had failed to uphold July’s aspirations. He said protesters had sought structural change so that the judiciary, administration, defense forces and other state institutions could function autonomously, corruption could be stopped and transparency ensured. Instead, he said, power had merely changed hands and no substantive reform had followed. He accused the current government of betraying the promises on which it came to office. Saddam urged the government to honor the bloodshed and sacrifices behind its formation, warning that young people would otherwise rise against it. He said Shibir wanted to rebuild Bangladesh and put every state institution to work for a more advanced country, and he thanked everyone who took part in the run.
