Jahangirnagar University expels eight students over ragging

Jahangirnagar University (JU) has temporarily expelled eight students of the physics department’s 54th batch over allegations of ragging new students of the 55th batch.

The information came in an office order signed by the university’s acting registrar, A B M Azizur Rahman, on Tuesday, July 21.

The order said that from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. on the night of July 20, several students of the physics department’s 54th batch (2024-25 session) took new students of the same department’s 55th batch (2025-26 session) to a room beside the university’s old arts building and subjected them to mental torture and intimidation. The matter came to the administration’s attention after it appeared on social media.

Under Section 5(6) of the university’s 2018 student disciplinary ordinance, teasing, ragging or abusive activities inside halls, departments or the campus are prohibited, the order said. With the preliminary truth of the allegation established, the eight accused students were temporarily expelled.

The relevant offices have been directed to take necessary further action, it added.
