Actor Ilias Kanchan, chairman of the road-safety organization Nirapad Sarak Chai, is returning to Bangladesh after more than 15 months of treatment in the United Kingdom. He is expected to arrive in Dhaka at about 5 p.m. Monday, organization Vice Chairman Liton Ershad told Samakal.

“Ilias Kanchan left London’s Heathrow Airport for Dhaka with his daughter and son-in-law late Sunday night Bangladesh time,” Ershad said. “The plane carrying him is scheduled to arrive at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 5 p.m. today.”

Kanchan has been receiving treatment in London since April last year after being diagnosed with a brain tumor. He stayed at a hospital and at the home of his daughter, Ima Islam. Surgeons at a London hospital removed a large part of the tumor in August last year but could not remove it completely because of the risk. Doctors later said he had brain cancer.

Family sources said the actor received more than 60 chemotherapy treatments over 12 weeks, five days a week. He then completed an initial three-month course of oral therapy and a second three-month course. Across three phases, he received about 100 chemotherapy treatments in total.

Ershad said: “After being outside the country for more than a year and a half, Ilias Kanchan became restless and longed to return. He told his family that since the third phase of therapy was complete, he wanted to come home for a few months. He is returning at his own request. His physical condition is not very good and has not improved much. The third phase ended on July 30, and a new treatment will begin after this. Before then, he wants to spend some time in Bangladesh.”

Asked how long Kanchan would remain in the country, Ershad said he would probably stay for seven to 10 days before returning to the United Kingdom.
