Police seized 10,500 yaba pills and 58 lakh taka in an anti-drug raid in Tongi, Gazipur, police said. Two men were arrested on charges of involvement in the drug trade.
They were arrested from the ground floor of a multi-storey building during a raid by Tongi West Police Station on Monday (June 15) night.
The arrested men are Anwar and Shaon. Police said the process of filing a case against them under the Narcotics Control Act was under way.
According to police sources, the raid was carried out on the ground floor of a multi-storey building on Muktarbari Road in the Tongi College Gate area, acting on confidential information.
The two men were detained in the raid, led by the officer-in-charge (OC) of Tongi West Police Station, Md. Arifur Rahman. Police later recovered 10,500 yaba pills and 58 lakh taka in cash from their custody.
Mohammad Belayet Hossain, additional police commissioner (crime and operations) of the Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP), said: “They were detained in a raid carried out on the basis of confidential information. An investigation is under way to find out where the drugs were sourced from and who else is involved.”
He said: “Efforts are being made through the investigation to identify the kingpins of the drug ring and bring them under the law. No matter how powerful this ring is, there will be no leniency. The GMP has launched anti-drug operations with a zero-tolerance policy.”
