The war in Gaza has reached its 1,000th day, and despite a ceasefire being in effect, violence has not fully stopped. Israeli strikes continue to kill Palestinians almost daily, Arab News reported.

According to Gaza’s health ministry, at least 1,053 Palestinians have been killed since the ceasefire took effect on October 10, including more than 350 women and children. More than 3,400 have been injured.

The fate of more than 2 million Palestinians in Gaza remains uncertain, with most displaced and living among the rubble.

Under the ceasefire, Israeli forces controlled more than half the territory, but Israel’s government has expanded its presence and said it aims to control 70 percent of the area. Very few people are able to enter or leave.

Negotiations on the next steps of the ceasefire — including Hamas’s disarmament and the massive task of reconstruction — have stalled.

Nicolas von Arx, the International Committee of the Red Cross’s regional director, said this week: “Much more needs to be done to bring even a semblance of normal life back. But we are still very far from that.”

The United Nations has warned that Israel’s expanding control in Gaza is increasing the lethal risk to civilians. In many areas, the lack of clear boundaries is putting ordinary people at even greater risk.

Since October 7, 2023, a total of 73,066 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli strikes on Gaza, according to the territory’s health ministry.
