Assailants shot three people at three locations across Khulna city within five days. All three survived with leg injuries. Police have not arrested anyone involved in the shootings, and residents are fearful as gang activity escalates in the metropolitan area.
According to police, scrap dealer Rafiqul Islam Manik was shot outside Gallamari Ideal Nursing Home Clinic in the Sonadanga police station area last Monday. On Thursday morning, a young man named Ratul Sheikh was shot at a field in the Ashibigha area under Labanchara police station. Most recently on Friday night, a teenage girl was shot in the Rupsha embankment area under Khulna Sadar police station.
A case was filed at Sonadanga police station over the shooting of Manik, alleging he was targeted for refusing to pay extortion. Seven to eight people including a local criminal named Sohail have been named as accused.
Ratul’s family did not file a case out of fear; the sub-inspector filed one instead. The teenage girl’s family had also not filed a case as of Saturday evening; police said they would file one themselves if the family does not.
From August 2024 to date — 23 months — 89 murders have occurred in Khulna. Nineteen killings took place in the first six months of this year. Police said 34 of the murders involved various criminal gangs.
