A farmer named Madhu Miya (58) has been hacked to death with a ramda (machete) on the Tahirpur road in Sunamganj, with rival parties accused of the killing. His wife, son and brother, among five others, were also hacked and injured.
Madhu Miya died while undergoing treatment in the ICU of Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital on Thursday (6 August) night.
The deceased Madhu Miya was the son of the late Harmuz Ali of Sundar Pahari village in Badaghat union, Tahirpur upazila, Sunamganj.
On Saturday, the victim’s wife Safia Begum said that on the morning of 26 July, 10 people — led by Abdul Hai, son of the late Tamiz Ali of Sundar Pahari village and Madhu Miya’s own cousin, together with Hai’s wife, six children and a daughter-in-law — attacked Madhu Miya with ramdas in a premeditated manner on the Badaghat–Sundar Pahari road, seriously injuring him. She alleged that, hearing the screams, she came out of the house onto the road, and that Abdul Hai and his family members also hacked and injured her. In the same incident, Madhu Miya’s son Sher Ali, brothers Abu Salam and Kashem, and Kashem’s son Biplob were also injured.
After the incident, four injured people were admitted to Sunamganj Sadar Hospital. As Madhu Miya and his brother Kashem were in critical condition, they were admitted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital on the afternoon of 26 July, where Madhu Miya died under treatment.
Tahirpur police station officer-in-charge (OC) Faruk Ahmed said that over the incident, Abu Salam, a resident of Sundar Pahari village, filed a written complaint at Tahirpur police station as plaintiff, naming nine people led by Abdul Hai and accusing a total of 15, including six unidentified others. The case was later recorded at the station. No accused had been arrested so far, and the allegations are yet to be tested in court.
Madhu Miya’s neighbour Humayun said the dispute began over the demarcation of 55 decimals of two-crop land in the haor in front of Sundar Pahari village. He claimed there were multiple general diaries (GDs) and cases at the police station and in court against Abdul Hai and his family members over this.
Abdul Hai’s mobile phone was found switched off when he was called for his comment on the allegation.
Sunamganj Superintendent of Police ABM Zakir Hossain PPM said the murder charge would be added to the FIR of the earlier case recorded at the station, and that police had been directed to quickly arrest those involved in the killing.
