BD Global Desk,

An argument and scuffle broke out between doctors and relatives over the death of a patient at Kushtia Medical College Hospital. Both sides claimed several people were injured. After tension spread through the hospital premises following the incident, police detained three people, including the dead patient’s son.

Atiar Sheikh, 65, a heart patient from Sauta village in Kumarkhali upazila, was admitted to Kushtia Medical College Hospital around 11pm on Friday, September 25.

Relatives claimed Atiar Sheikh was told to undergo an ECG on the advice of the intern doctor on duty. He died in the meantime. An argument then began between doctors and relatives. At one stage, the situation became heated and a scuffle broke out.

Ripon Sheikh, the dead patient’s son, said they did not misbehave in any way with doctors or nurses.

Relatives instead alleged that hospital doctors and staff attacked them one-sidedly. They also claimed several people were injured.

After news of the incident spread, angry intern doctors and medical college students gathered on the hospital premises. Police later went to the scene to control the situation. At that time, a meeting was held among hospital authorities, police administration, doctors on duty and intern doctors. After the meeting, based on the intern doctors’ complaint, police detained the dead patient’s son Obaidur Islam and two of his relatives, Ruhul Amin and Hazrat Ali, and took them to the police station.

Detainee Obaidul Islam said, “This incident happened over my father’s death. The doctors beat us severely.”

Hospital deputy director Dr Akul Uddin said, “This situation was created when the patient’s relatives attacked intern doctors. The hospital situation is now normal and medical services are also continuing normally.”

Meanwhile, no formal statement was available from intern doctors and students about the incident. They said the next decision would be announced formally on Saturday.

Around 3am, Model police took the three detainees to the police station. Medical services at the hospital are currently normal. Relatives took Atiar Sheikh’s body home from the hospital.
