CUMILLA — A 35-year-old man was hacked to death by his older brother on Thursday in a village in southern Cumilla, after a dispute over noise that disturbed his sister-in-law’s sleep, police said.
The victim, Foysal, 35, was killed by his elder brother Morshed, 40, in Goalgaon village under Pashchim Jorkanan union of Cumilla Sadar Dakshin upazila, said Mohammad Rakibul Islam, officer-in-charge of Cumilla Sadar Dakshin Model Police Station. The suspect has been detained.
Foysal was the son of the late Raja Mia of the same village. Morshed is his elder brother.
Citing local residents, Islam said Morshed’s wife works at a nearby factory and had returned home Thursday morning after a night shift to sleep.
Later that morning, when children playing near the house grew noisy, Morshed came out and scolded them, saying his wife’s sleep was being disturbed. Foysal asked him to stop, sparking a quarrel between the two brothers, who then both left the house, the officer said.
Around 1:30 p.m., the brothers returned home and resumed quarreling. At one point, Morshed went into the house, brought out a machete and struck Foysal, leaving him critically wounded, police said.
Local residents rushed him to Cumilla Medical College Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.
Police sent the body to the Cumilla Medical College Hospital morgue.
Morshed was detained around 3:30 p.m. during a raid at the local Suagazi market, Islam said.
A case is being prepared at the police station, he added.
