Police have arrested six people over the gang rape of a housewife and her school-going daughter following a robbery in Cox’s Bazar’s newly formed Matamuhuri upazila. The attack took place at about 2:30am on Monday night. The arrested men — Rezaul, Mehedi, Babu, Kefayet, Tanjid and Mohammad Tarek — are residents of the same upazila.

Locals said an armed gang of eight to ten cut through the window grille of a businessman’s house and got inside. With the businessman away, they gang-raped his wife and his daughter, a tenth-grade student, and looted cash, gold ornaments and other valuables. The seriously injured mother and daughter were rescued and first taken to the Chakaria upazila health complex, then transferred to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital as their condition worsened. The housewife’s younger brother said his niece was being treated in intensive care (ICU) because of excessive bleeding, and that her condition remained critical.

On receiving news of the attack, several police teams led by Chakaria circle assistant superintendent of police Abhijit Das went to the scene and began investigating. Six people were arrested in operations from dawn to morning on Tuesday. Chakaria police officer-in-charge (OC) Md Monir Hossain confirmed the incident, saying: “Six people have been arrested so far in this case. Preliminary evidence of direct involvement has been found against four of them.”
