Wildfires in the Spokane area of Washington state have destroyed at least 600 structures and displaced 60,000 people.

Fire has burned 8.2 square miles in the state’s second-largest city and about 390 square miles across Washington, straining local and federal agencies. The fires were so intense that patients were evacuated from a veterans hospital.

Sen. Maria Cantwell warned that dry weather and strong winds would make the coming days more challenging. Gov. Bob Ferguson declared a state of emergency, and a shelter opened at the Spokane Convention Center.

Several active fires, including the Old Trails, Fairview and Midview fires, have left thousands of people without electricity as crews repair utility lines.

Another large wildfire sparked by lightning in western Idaho and eastern Oregon has burned 525 square miles of grassland over the past 10 days, threatening hundreds of homes and livestock farms. Dry, sunny conditions are forecast in the region, with temperatures expected to exceed 90 degrees Fahrenheit.

The National Weather Service issued alerts across several states for poor air quality, extreme heat and red-flag fire conditions.
