On the World Cup stage, Lionel Messi seems to be writing new history at every turn. By scoring twice in Argentina’s 2-0 win over Austria, he not only took his side into the knockout round but also set four new Guinness World Records.

Messi was the hero of Argentina’s win in the match held in Texas. His two goals secured a place in the last 32 for the reigning world champions, but it was Messi’s new records that drew the most attention after the match.

The Argentine sports outlet TYC Sports, citing Guinness World Records, reported that by scoring a brace against Austria, Messi had taken his total World Cup tally to 18.

With this feat, he moved past the German legend Miroslav Klose’s record of 16 goals to sit alone as the all-time top scorer in the history of the men’s World Cup. He also surpassed the 17-goal record of Brazil’s women’s football star Marta to earn recognition as the all-time top scorer at the World Cup across both men’s and women’s football.

Beyond the goal record, Messi also reached a new milestone in terms of wins. The victory over Austria was his 18th win at the World Cup, surpassing Klose’s record of 17 wins.

By taking part in the match, he also enriched his record for the most World Cup matches played. His number of World Cup matches now stands at 28, the highest in the tournament’s history.

Another notable achievement came in terms of playing time. With a total of 2,489 minutes on the pitch at the World Cup, Messi also broke the Italian legend Paolo Maldini’s record of 2,217 minutes.

By making four new Guinness records his own in a single match, he proved once again that his name occupies a special height in the history of the World Cup.
