Fadi Hamdallah al-Nasan, a spirited 17-year-old and a player for Palestine’s national youth team, was seriously wounded by gunfire during an attack by Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank and had been fighting for his life in hospital. That fight ended in his death. Palestinian officials and family members confirmed his death, saying Fadi had been shot on 11 July during a settler attack in his village in the West Bank and died on Saturday.
Fadi played for the al-Mughayyir club and was a member of Palestine’s national youth team. The teenage footballer’s death has drawn fresh attention to the rising violence by Israeli settlers and soldiers against Palestinians across the West Bank. Israel has occupied the territory since 1967 and is rapidly advancing settlement activity there despite it being illegal under international law; international human-rights organisations and the United Nations have described Israel’s West Bank settlement activity as an apartheid system. Fadi was buried on Saturday in his home village of al-Mughayyir, with several hundred mourners in black carrying his body from the Palestine Medical Complex in Ramallah to his village.
The Palestine Football Association (PFA), in a statement on X, said that when Israeli settlers attacked the village, Israeli soldiers shot Fadi in the thigh, and his leg later had to be amputated; he died of that injury. The statement said his death raised to 1,013 the number of martyrs in Palestinian sport from Israeli attacks since the war began on 7 October 2023, of whom 568 were from Palestine’s football family. Fadi’s father, Hamdallah al-Nasan, said his son had rushed toward the scene after hearing the screams of women and girls during the attack on the village: “He lost his life because he went there,” the father said. Fadi’s mother, Hanan al-Nasan, said of her son: “He was a very good student and brilliant at sports. He loved playing football. Everyone liked him.”
