BEIJING — Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi that the war waged by the United States and Israel against Iran was “illegal,” and said Beijing was ready to keep working to ease tensions, during talks in the Chinese capital.
“A full ceasefire is essential,” Wang said, adding that the region was at “a critical moment” and that direct talks between the two sides were needed.
Araghchi thanked China for its “firm position,” particularly its condemnation of the United States and Israel, and said Beijing would remain “a close friend of Iran.” He described the war against Iran as “a brazen aggression and a gross violation of international law.”
Araghchi said Tehran would “do everything possible to defend our legitimate rights and interests in any negotiations” and would accept only “a fair and comprehensive agreement.”
