Russia again launched a devastating overnight attack on the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said it was Russia’s largest single-night ballistic-missile barrage since the war began in 2022. At least one person was killed and at least 15 injured in the hours-long attack early on Sunday, and Ukraine’s national police said six districts of Kyiv were affected.
Ukraine’s emergency service said the Russian missile strikes started fires at multiple sites across Kyiv, damaging residential buildings, offices, industrial premises, a student hostel and several vehicles. Rescuers pulled four people from a burning private house in the Sviatoshynskyi district and safely evacuated residents from a fire-damaged three-storey building in the Shevchenkivskyi district. A body was later recovered from the rubble of a non-residential building. Fires also broke out in the Solomianskyi, Desnianskyi and Dnipro districts. Sybiha called the ballistic-missile strike on Kyiv “a brutal terrorist attack on Ukraine’s capital,” saying on X that all-out, crushing pressure must be put on Moscow to stop the terror.
A Russian drone strike also killed one person in Ukraine’s central Dnipropetrovsk region, regional official Oleksandr Ganzha said. In the Zaporizhzhia region, a Russian drone hit a passenger train, killing one of its conductors, Ukraine’s national railway authority said, releasing photos of a burnt-out carriage. Al Jazeera reported that Ukraine, now in the fifth year of the war, faces Russian attacks almost daily but is short of missiles for its Patriot air-defence system, considered the most effective weapon against ballistic missiles.
Political tension has also risen after President Volodymyr Zelensky removed the defence minister as part of a cabinet reshuffle, prompting protests in the capital and discontent among some Ukrainian troops. Critics say removing Mykhailo Fedorov as defence minister just as Ukraine was regaining some momentum on the battlefield was one of the biggest mistakes of Zelensky’s presidency. Russia has launched several major attacks on Kyiv in July, using ballistic missiles in at least seven separate strikes, according to Ukraine, at a time when its stock of Patriot interceptor missiles has fallen. On Sunday, Ukraine’s air force said 18 of 41 missiles fired overnight by Russia had been shot down. Ukraine also claimed its forces had attacked two Russian oil tankers in the Black Sea, saying it was targeting shipping to disrupt fuel and other supplies to the Russian-occupied Crimean peninsula.
